Each registered domain name has no less than 2 Name Server records which show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you direct your domain name to the servers of a specific website hosting company. In this way, you've got both your site and your emails handled by the exact same provider. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), however, there is a variety of other records, for instance A and MX. The former reveals which server handles the website for a given Internet domain and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the latter shows which server manages the e-mails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). For instance, whenever you type a domain in your browser, your request is directed through the global DNS system to the provider whose NS records the domain name uses and from there you may be directed to the servers of another company provided you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your domain. Having separate records for the site and the emails suggests that you could have your site and your e-mails with two different providers if you would like.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

The Hepsia hosting Control Panel, provided with our Linux semi-dedicated hosting packages, allows you to see the A and MX records for any of the domains or subdomains in your account and if required, to edit any of them or set up new ones. Handling these records is quite easy since all domains/subdomains will be listed alphabetically, so editing a record is as simple as entering it in a box and saving the change. Creating a new one takes just a couple of more clicks and if you experience any issues, you can check out our instructional videos on how to set up A and MX records. Our system is intuitive enough to be used by people with no previous experience, yet advanced enough to provide you with complete control of all records and to allow you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you're moving your emails to a different provider and they ask you to set up more than 2 different MX records, you may choose the priority of each one.
